Aspecton Cough Syrup

The main ingredients are essential thyme oil and its main components, (thymol & carvacrol).

Pharmacokinetics
For essential oils and their individual components, it is generally known that these are resorbed well and rapidly via the skin and mucous membranes, due to their lipophilicity and low molecular size. Following systemic uptake, essential oils are eliminated via the urine and lungs.

Pharmacological  studies
1. Interaction with the β2-receptor, musclerelaxing effects Constituents of Aspecton Cough Drops interact in a dose-dependent
manner with the β 2-receptor in rat tracheal membrane preparations.

2. Secretomotor effects
Aspecton Cough Drops accelerated mucociliary clearance in the mouse. For this a fluorescent dye was added to a selected site
of the bronchial tract. In the animals pre-treated with the test preparation, ciliary transport of the dye occurred twice as fast as in the control group.

3. Antiviral properties
For Aspecton Cough Drops, antiviral activity was confirmed against respiratory tract-relevant viruses in a current study. The virus strains used were influenza virus A and human rhinoviruses (HRV; serotypes 1a and 16).

Due to the predominantly viral origin of acute respiratory tract infections, the antiviral effect demonstrated for
Aspecton® Cough Drops is a promising result. It is noteworthy that,
in this study, the antiviral activity against respiratory tract-relevant
viruses, influenza virus A and human rhinoviruses (HRV 1A, HRV 16), was proven for the first time for a thyme preparation.

Observational study on children
An observational study on Aspecton Cough Syrup and Aspecton Cough Drops was conducted on a total of 204 children (age: 1–12 years) with acute symptoms of a cold and/or bronchitis.

Observational study on children
Due to its galenic formulation and taste (fennel oil), Aspecton Cough Syrup was, as expected, especially well accepted by the children.

At the end of the study, tolerability was assessed as "good" to "very good" in 100 % of the children by the doctors, and in 97.9 % by the parents.
